What happens when a child is constantly left alone by very busy parents who have no time to play? How does a boy, who is left alone at the precipice of his childhood, negotiate his entrance into an adult consciousness? Ravel presents us with an allegory of ourselves, both as adults and as children growing up. The Child of the L’Enfant et les Sortilèges is escorted by furnitures, animals, and blended creatures of reality and imagination, towards an understanding that he possesses all tendencies of cruelty and compassion. It is a story about learning the consequences of one’s own actions and of apprehending that meanness is a decision. The fantastical characters, with their own eccentricities and intrigues, guide the Child’s coming of age. They blend a child's imaginings with the fantasies of an adult world and create the reverie of a masquerade ball.
